Montenegro (June 2013)

What could you tell about Montenegro?  We are indeed a very beautiful neighbourhood.  In Balkans a traveller could discover an incredible natural wealth.  I believe that this natural wealth is the only thing that the Balkan Peninsula got, because if somebody try to make comparisons in the areas of development and production, rather the Balkans will upset....

I have visited Montenegro at least five times in the past, and every time I discover something new.  A country of a total area 13.812 km² with a population of approximately 625,000 inhabitants.  In June of 2013 the first official meeting of Horizons Unlimited it would held in Montenegro, and Vana and I grabbed the opportunity for a five-day getaway from the daily grind....

Entry applications for the HU meeting were made on time, and on Thursday 27.06.2013  we started another trip....  We left back our house early in the morning, since we wanted to get to the borders with Albania (in Kakavia border station) early, to cross Albania and be in Kotor, Montenegro in the evening.  At 08:00 we were at the borders, and without a delay in the proceedings, we crossed the borders and I started driving on the Albanian roads.  Albania is familiar to me, and the most of the times I've crossed this country, every time I see more and more progress on the construction of the highway which will cross the country from south to north.  In the parts of the road which was under construction we swallow a lot of dust, and mud on the gravel parts of the road, was often dense.  After almost five hours we had crossed Albania (340 km), and we entered on the narrow streets of Montenegro.  Very beautiful route.  After 100 kilometers we arrived at the magnificent Kotor where we spent a night.  I had visited Kotor in the past, but for Vana was the first time there.  I could say that she was impressed by its beauty, and much more when she saw the city from an altitude,  when she visited the castle....  Our hotel was in the old city and this was very convenient.  I didn't like that it was prohibiting to enter the bike in the old town, and I parked it outside the walls.... I had a concern about it, but luckily no problem!

The next day, we packed again our stuff, we loaded our bags on the bike and hit the road to Kolasin, where would become the meeting of Horizons Unlimited.  Kolasin is one of the two ski resorts of Montenegro.  The other one is Zabljak, which I had visited it in 2011.  Driving up the mountain above Kotor towards Podgorica, the view downhill was breathtaking.  We crossed the National Park Lovcen, which had nice turns and natural beauty.  After Podgorica we stopped for a coffee in a kafana (coffee house) and after a short stop we continued our way to a little dangerous and wet road to Kolasin.  On our way we saw people standing on a bridge looking down the cliff where a car had dived, some time earlier.  We continued our way shocked and after a few kilometers we saw a car balancing slightly towards the cliff and the more on the edge of the slippery road.  An injured woman on roadside accepted first aid.  The road from Podgorica to Kolasin it is quite dangerous.  We arrived at the hotel we had booked in Kolasin, we got some rest, and after a little while we left our hotel for the mountain (Eko Katun), where was taking place the HU meeting.  Motorcyclists from several countries had occupied the space of the camp that had been allocated for the meeting.  A motorcycling feast. Presentations of moto-trips were took place on that afternoon.  The sky was full of grey clouds ready for rain and the temperature close to 10 ° C.

The next day we went again to meet our co-partcipants in the meeting.  We attended a first aid course for motorcyclists, various ways of dealing with problems during a trip and of course presentations of trips around the world.

In the afternoon we visited the National Park Biogradska Gora, and the lake inside the park, Biogradsko Jezero, which is in 1.800 meters altitude.  The sky was overcast again with the temperature ranging from 6 to 12° C.  We enjoyed a hot coffee in the cafeteria in the park, and we left fulfilled of the greatness of the nature. The evening ended in a nice tavern located in the center of Kolasin, where we had for dinner, hot soups and local food.

On Sunday 28/7 we loaded the panniers for one more time on the motorcycle, and we left Kolasin for Ohrid (FYROM).  Our route was through Kosovo with a total of 460 km.  At the border of Kosovo I payed 15 € border security.  The Green card (Insuranse) was not valid for Kosovo.  It really impressed us that in Kosovo and in FYROM many waved Albanian flags and not their own country flags.  After the city of Gostivar (FYROM), we stopped at a village named Vrutok and we ate a delicious trout.  It was the second time I stopped there and tends to become station.  On our way to Ohrid, we visited the National Park of Mavrovo.  There is a lake on Mavrovo at 1300 meters altitude, and the scenery up there is awesome.

Late in the afternoon we arrived in Ohrid, which was our last station on that trip.  Ohrid, a lakeside scenic town is a good and cheap destination for Greeks, and it is just a short distance from our northern borders.  We spent our last night of that trip cruising the coast and the main pedestrian street of the city.

The next morning we woke up too early.  Our departure was at four in the morning in order to be in a reasonable hour back in our work....  We crossed the town of Bitola and the border station of Niki, and we headed south....  We crossed the western part of Greece and after 510 kilometers we arrived at Rion.  On eleven o'clock we were in our offices....

It was a five day -short- trip filled with 1.950 kilometers, and many beautiful pictures from the meeting of Horizons Unlimited....
