South Italy (March 2005)

Written by Thanasis Vavaroutas. Posted in Expeditions

Southwest Italy is always a perfect destination for motorcyclists!  Naples differs from the north-Italian cities a lot!  The coast from Naples to Amalfi is magnificent!  Five couples on five motorcycles we started our trip from the Port of Patras, Greece.  We embarked on the ferry with a destination of the Port of Bari, Italy.  We drove to Naples, crossing Central Italy through a beautiful scenery of nature.  Its name comes from the Greek Neapolis meaning new city.  Naples  is a lively and vibrant city, full of wonderful historical and artistic treasures and narrow, winding streets with small shops, making it worth at least a few days visit.  We  also visited the Volcano of Vesuvius and the Ancient City of Pompeii in the suburbs of Naples.  The island of Capri  is a must visit for someone who visits Naples.  Capri is an enchanting and picturesque island made of limestone rock.  The island's top attraction is the famous Blue Grotto, Grotta Azzurra.  During our three day stay in Naples, we dedicated one day to Costa Amalfitana.  The scenic Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's top travel destinations.  It is declared one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its undisputed beauty and the uniqueness of its natural landscape.  We drove to the towns of Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi.  Sorrento sits on a long cliff amid lemon and olive groves overlooking the sea.  The old town, still retaining its Roman grid of narrow streets.  We walked in Via San Cesareo and of course we tasted limoncello....

Positano is one of Italy's most romantic and luxurious vacation spots.  Built vertically on the face of a cliff, is a pedestrian town (with many stairs) and its pretty pastel colored houses and flowers make it very picturesque.

Amalfiwith its wonderful views, is the main town of the Amalfi coast.  Narrow alleyways wind through the town up the slopes between the sea and mountains.  We visited the Duomo di Sant' Andrea and Cloister of Paradise, which is the Duomo and I admired it's bronze doors...

We left Naples to return to the port of Bari to get the ferry to Greece. On our way to Bari we made two short visits to Matera  and Alberobello.  Matera is an interesting city in the Basilicata region, of southern Italy known for its picturesque sassi district, a large ravine with cave dwellings and rupestrian churches dug into the soft limestone.  The sassi date from prehistoric times and were used as housing until the 1950's when residents, primarily living in poverty stricken conditions, were relocated.  Today the sassi district is a fascinating sight that can be viewed from above and explored on foot.

Alberobello is just over 20 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea.  The key feature of the town consists of the trulli, a word that derives from the Greek "tholos" ("dome").  The trulli are old, round buildings of limestone blocks built without mortar (but mortar has usually been added more recently in inhabited trulli). The conical roofs are made up of flat stones  The historical centre with its ‘trulli’ (as the houses are called, sing. 'trullo') has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was a short trip with with a few kilometers driven (just 650 kms), but we visited a lot of places and we had a lot of fun...

Italy is always a good escape for Greeks because is near by Greece!
